Summer Camp with Filament Theatre

Explore our 2023 camps!

A notorious art thief is on the loose and it’s up to the Filament Museum curators to save their favorite artworks and catch the thief before another priceless treasure is lost, or worse, scribbled all over with orange paint, the vandal’s signature move! Campers will explore famous works of art, discover clues, and attempt to catch the Orange Bandit! Learn the fundamentals of Filament Theatre’s playmaking techniques, explore visual art and story structure, and go to the park each day for games! By the end of the session, you’ll be ready to curate your own museum exhibit full of original stories–and you’ll be ready to unmask the Orange Bandit!

Pitch your tent, solve riddles, and journey deep into the forest for an adventure that will spark your imagination! There’s a mysterious creature hiding in the forest–what is it doing there and is it a friend, fearsome beast, or both?! Campers will use storytelling traditions from around the world to build a forest of stories to explore! Learn the fundamentals of Filament Theatre’s playmaking techniques, explore design and story structure, and go to the park each day for scavenger hunts! By the end of the session, you’ll be ready to invite your friends and family to join you on a very special adventure into the Firelight Forest.

Pluto was a planet when it was discovered, but then suddenly, one day, the International Astronomical Union decided it was no longer a planet. Did anyone think to talk to Pluto? Not really … and not until now. Using the story of Pluto and the vast expanse of space as our playground, campers will explore important questions about their identity and their sense of belonging. In this affirmative and celebratory camp for anyone exploring identity, we will travel to outer space with improv, writing, movement and more. Filament and the Center on Halsted extends a special invitation to kids who are queer, trans, and their friends and allies. We’ll discover how our identities are entire universes, all while helping a Chicago playwright develop a brand new play for young audiences. Campers will learn the fundamentals of Filament Theatre’s playmaking techniques and go to the park each day for lunch! By the end of the week, you’ll be ready to perform empowering original stories for family and friends.

This curriculum has been developed with support from the Center on Halsted.
Are you a lover of mythological creatures and magical beings? Have you ever wanted to create your own? Bring the characters from your imagination to life using methods like puppetry, circus, and commedia. Through theatre games, prop and set design, and physical comedy, participants will build original characters ready to face intergalactic challenges and learn to build new worlds. Campers will explore fantasy tropes that have their roots in myth and folklore, learn the fundamentals of Filament Theatre’s playmaking techniques, and gain new skills in clowning, shadow puppetry, and projections. We’ll go to the park each day for lunch and by the end of the week, you’ll be ready to perform extraordinary feats for family and friends using all of your new theatre skills.
